Arctic Report February 16, 2017

Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), chairman of the House Environment Subcommittee, called the hearing on environmental laws to discuss their impacts on economic growth and how environmental regulations could be modernized.
In his opening statement, Rep. Shimkus said he wants to remove EPA’s barriers to development and accelerate infrastructure growth. He said EPA’s slow pace on regulation and permitting prevents realistic project timelines, and the uncertainty leads to lost investments.

The policies and practices of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency came under full scrutiny at a hearing held by the House Science, Space & Technology Committee on Feb. 7. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), the chairman, said that the EPA has pursued a political agenda that wasn’t based on science during President Barack Obama’s administration, and the agency proposed regulations that had no significant impact on the environment.

The House subcommittees for Coast Guard & Marine Transportation and Water Resources & Environment held a joint hearing on Sept. 7 to discuss the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Coast Guard maritime navigation programs and initiatives.
The hearing focused on charting, accurate navigational aids, and the potential rise of “e-navigation.” New electronic navigation technologies could change maritime transportation functions dramatically, and also pose new risks to the system.
